I was really happy and excited by this week’s results especially with Kim Jong Wook’s advancement to the top slot this week; although I find it ironic that his single hit the top spot, while his duet with SG Wannabe was kicked out of the top 20 after being stable in the 18th slot for a few weeks. Very touching music video, and even though his voice range is a little high for my personal taste, it can definately said that this guy sings with his heart and a hell of a talent :) Congratulations to Big Bang with their Sunset Glow single which was dedicated to the oil spill on a beach on South Korea and the music video was meant to prompt more people to go and visit the now deserted beach. As we see some of the big hits of last month such as Mirotic and Nobody start to fade into the background, there have been a lot more singles starting to surface! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Food For Thought: Fangirls

18 11 2008

Browsing through the internet, I discovered Soy’s Mind, a blog created by the founder of soshified.com, one of most renowned international So Nyo Shi Dae fansites. There, she posted an interesting response to the reaction to the word “fangirl”. As provided by Wikipedia, the definition of fangirl is as follows:

The term fangirl can be used to describe a female member of a fandom community (as opposed to the masculine “fanboy“). However, it is most often used in a derogatory sense to describe a girl’s obsession with something, most commonly a male teen idol or an aspect. Fangirl behaviour is believed to vary in intensity. On one end of the scale are those that, while harbouring a crush on a particular actor or character, are perfectly capable of understanding that the fulfilment of the crush is never going to happen. On the other end are the girls who are said to be obsessive in their claims on a fictional character. Fangirl behaviour can fall anywhere between these criteria, but the closer someone is believed to be towards the obsessive end, the more derogative the use of the term ‘fangirl’ to describe them is perceived to be.

In the fandom world, society, and even the entertainment industry can sometimes be sexest towards the outcome of the fans. Many believe that boy bands should only have female fans, and female bands should only have male fans. You choose otherwise and defy the rules, you will be labeled a homosexual. One example, of course, is korean pop bands such as Big Bang, Wonder Girls, Girls’ Generation, Shinee, SG Wannabe, BoA and many others. When you view different fan clubs, you start to see the division in gender. Boy bands usually have a majority of female fans and female bands have a majority of male supporters. There’s nothing wrong with that, but boys should not be intimidated to express their liking for a boy bands and similarily for female fans. Just because a girl likes a female band like Wonder Girls or Girls’ Generation doesn’t make them a lesbian and gay men aren’t boys who like Big Bang.

Personally, I like Girls’ Generation, Big Bang, SG Wannabe, Wonder Girls (a littly iffy), etc. and why should I be intimidated to say that I like female bands. If I hear one day the some member from Girls’ Generation or Wonder Girls is going out with some random guy, my heart isn’t going to burst and I’m not going to commit suicide. I’m going to support my bands and their members and stand by whatever they do. Which brings up the topic about Girls’ Generation memeber Yoona in her current drama, You Are My Destiny. It seems that many of the male fans are against any kissing in the drama because it’ll tear their hearts out. Please, be realistic. She’s acting in a drama for goodness sake, not getting married, and even it she was why should that be an issue? As fans, there should be support and confidence in what she does, and not what you, personally, want her to do. So the next time your watching any drama and see your favorite actor or actress on the screen, think about what would be best for the drama and for the future, not some selfish request. That is the heart of a true fan.

So the next time you listen to music or watch a drama or movie, listen and watch with your heart. I go by the music and the talent. When I listen to a bands, I LISTEN to a band and choose them based on skill and talent, not constantly afraid of social criticism. Music is something of an enjoyment, not a plaque or symbol to hold up saying how perfect you are. We should listen to music regardless of who is singing or dancing behind it. When you like a band, go for it and please, on a fan forum, don’t check what you think the “correct” gender should be. You want to be a fan, then be one.

Drama Note 29: Major Updates!!

17 11 2008

  • Won Bin, famous for his acting roles in the drama Autumn Tale and Friends, is returning to the big screen with his movie, Mother. The movie revolves around Won Bin, who is falsely accused of murder and his mother, played my Kim Hye Ja.
  • After Tazza finishes airing in December, the drama Terroir plans to take its slot as SBS’s Monday and Tuesday drama. The plot is about Kang Tae Min, a man who was taught in the art of tasting wine. Tae Min inherited the wine production from his family and introduces Lee Woo Joo to the world of wine. The cast includes Kim Joo Hyuk (Lovers in Prague) as Kim Tae Min and Han Hye Jin (Jumong) as Lee Woo Joo. Apparently, the production of this drama started about two years ago and has not been released until recently and has had a costly budget of about 6 million U.S. dollars. Not surprisingly, the drama’s setting is to take place in France, the wine capital of the world and this will be the first Korean drama to dedicate its plot to the wine industry.
  • Some old news about the SBS drama Cain and Abel that I haven’t gotten around to posting. The original storyline was about two brothers who were separated when they were young and they grew up to be two different people. One was a gangster whereas the other was a detective and they both fell in love with the same girl. The original storyline seems a tad too cliché for an average audience and foreshadows some kind of drama death, that I’m sick of, but might have gotten some points for strong acting. The plot has been changed to: Cho In is a very gifted doctor who has everything that he wants whereas his older brother, Seon Woo, is jealous of all the attention that Cho In receives. Seon Woo blames his brother for taking everything good in his life away from him. Seon Woo blames Cho In for getting their father’s love, getting more recognition as a doctor, and for stealing the woman he loves. So Ji Sub (I’m Sorry I Loved You) plays Cho In, the innocent and gifted doctor, whereas his costar, Shin Hyun Joon (Stairway to Heaven) plays the evil and jealous older brother. Han Ji Min (Capital Scandal) and Chae Jung Ahn (Coffee Prince) plays the main female roles. Compared to the original cast, Jung Ryu Won (Which Star Are You From) and Ji Jin Hee (Spotlight), which backed out due to delays in airing this drama, the hastily assembled cast has a lot to live up to.
  • Some new features that have been added to the blog. I’ve decided to change the style in favor of a wider colun so more room for writing and comments!
  • Also, I’ve added two new pages, KDram and TW Drama that will contain some reviews about dramas that I have watched in the past. For the drama such as Hong Gil Dong and Bull Fighting, the original reviews will be condensed and posted in under the correct pages. Please check them out and leave comments.
  • I have added another category called Food For Thought for some deep down personal thoughts about the entertainment industry or some corks and thoughts about society. Read, comment, and critique.
  • Lastly, the pages KDrama OST Downloads and TW Drama OST Downlaods has been combined under one page: Original Soundtracks because it seems kind of burdensome to have two separate pages. Enjoy!

  23. Kim Bum Soo – Sad Reflection
  24. Haihm – Possibly Us
  25. Big Bang - Sunset Glow (NEW)

I must say that I was extremely suprised that Bi’s Rainism was able to rise to the top of the charts this week especially while finding that DBSK’s Mirotice and Wonder Girls’ Nobody not in the number 2 and 3 slots, though I must say that the graphics and dance moves in his music video are amazing. He has a thing for water (Bi – I’m Coming MV). Also congrats to Kim Jong Wook’s Today More Than Yesterday for rising up seven points in the charts and missing the first place slot by only one point, Taeyeon’s Can You Hear Me for moving up the charts this week. But again, in general, some of the more dramatic decreases came from more reknowned artists and some standstill ratings. Shinee’s Love Like Oxygen and Younha were just two names that were absent from this week’s listings and F.T Island’s Heaven that debut’s last week has already dropped to the 20th slot. However, we are seeing a lot of new faces rising up in the charts and it’ll be interesting to see who make the top three next week. Please welcome this week’s new comer: Shinee’s Amigo. Enjoy!

12 11 2008

  1. Wonder Girls – Nobobdy (The Wonder Girls were finally able to reach the number one placing on the charts, and breaking DBSK’s Mirotic streak for about a month. Congratulations!)
  2. DBSK - Mirotic
  3. Bi – Rainism
  4. Brown Eyed Girls – How
  5. Epik High – 1 Minute 1 Second
  6. See Ya – Hot Girl
  7. Son Dam Bi – Become Crazy
  8. MC the Max – Tears Without Knowing
  9. Kim Jong Kook – Tomorrow More Than Yesterday (Largest Progress of the Week!!)
  10. Crown J – Fly Boy
  11. Shin Seung Hoon – Turn on The Radio
  12. Son Ho Young – I Know
  13. 2 PM – 10 out of 10
  14. Taeyeon - Can You Hear Me (Beethoven Virus OST)
  15. W & Whale – RPG Shine
  16. M ft. Bigtone – Don’t Trust Men
  17. F.T Island – Heaven (DEBUT)
  18. SG Wannabe & Kim Jong Wook – Opposed by Fate
  19. TBNY – Hey DJ
  20. Shinee – Love Like Oxygen
  21. U Kiss – Not Young
  22. Kim Bum Soo – Sad Inflection
  23. Davichi – Going to the Hospital
  24. Younha – Gossip Boy
  25. Untouchable ft. Hwan Yobi – It’s Okay

I feel that in general for this week, especially some of the more famous singers, such as Epik High, SG Wannabe, and Minwoo have gone down in the charts this week as there were a lot of lowering of ranking and scores. One of the biggest improvements is Kim Jong Kook as this is second huge raise in the music charts. Taeyeon is slowing rising with “Can You Hear Me” as F.T Island just released their album. Again, congratulations to the Wonder Girls to placing first in this week’s music charts and it’ll be curious to see who places first and second in the third week of November. Probably the most shocking was Shinee’s lowering of rank to number 20 and loosing 11 points, score wise. However, there were a lot of new faces in the 21-25 category, with Younha’s Telepathy being replaced by her song Gossip Boy.

Drama Note 28: Kim Tae Hee Returns…

  • 28-year old actress and model Kim Tae Hee returns to the drama screen after five years, in the drama IRIS, scheduled to air in 2009. She co-stars with Lee Byung Hyun (All In) and Big Bang singer turned actor T.O.P. (I am Sam). The drama revolves around national organizations with Lee Byung Hyun and T.O.P. acting as assassins and Kim Tae Hee as a psychological analysist.
  • Hollywood films starring Korean actors seems to have become a new trend in the entertainment business. Two movies are playing to air next year starring former G.O.D. member Park

Drama Note 28: K-pop Singers Go To College

10 11 2008

  • Really short post, but as you can see from the movie above, Wonder Girl’s Sunye and So Nyo Shi Dae’s Yoona have both been accepted into Dongguk University, also the university that was supposedly attended by Yoona’s You Are My Destiny co-stars Lee Ji Hoon and Park Jae Jung. A little reputation for accepting celebrities, no?
  • Please check out a collaboration music video between me and summerxsummer00 that is supposed (emphasis the supposed) to come out by the end of this year. I am also hoping to make a drama awards MV as I had promised at the beginning of this year. If there are any people, especially those fluent in chinese, korean and english, who would like to help, please contact me on youtube, here, or through my email!!! Have a great Veteran’s Day!
  • Lastly, I have decided to add a Music category to the site because I feel like I’m putting too much music stuff into the drama notes and it should be a separated category. I plan to post the Weekly Music charts that are provided on soompi (and of course give credit to them) and some comments on random MV! yay?!
